Sea Turtle Camp 2010 was a success

The Nevis Turtle Group in conjunction with the Department of Fisheries of the Nevis Island Administration, the Rufford Small Grants Foundation and the Georgia Sea Turtle Centre held the 5th annual Sea Turtle Camp on Nevis. The camp was held from July 19th to 30th 2010 at the Ministry of Agriculture conference room at Prospect. For the first time the camp was held over a two week period so that more campers could be accommodated. The two week span also allowed children that were engaged in other activities for the summer to allocate one week to sea turtle camp.

Approximately 50 children between the ages of 5 and 16 attended the camp. They were involved in activities such as making craft items, role playing, games and field trips.

A number of the children loved so much that they attended both morning and afternoon sessions. Some were there for the whole two weeks of camp. When the campers went on field trips to the main nesting beach (Lovers or Seahaven beach) they were able to identify turtle tracks and turtle eggs. They also engaged in a cleanup of the beach removing items such as plastic bottles that littered the beach.

The camp concluded with sea turtle jeopardy quiz that generated much excitement. Such has been the level of interest that we are considering holding another camp during the "winter" break. It is hoped that this attempt to engage the children of Nevis in sea turtle conservation will assist in the sustainable use of our marine resources so that present as well as future generations can benefit from them.
